The Club was
formed in 1893 to compete in a local league and its early history
is unfortunately somewhat vague. In 1949 the Club became a
founder member of the Peterborough & District Premier
Division and although they have never won the League championship
the Club has achieved runners-up spot on many occasions, the most
recent being in the 1985/86 campaign. At the end of the 1987/88
season the Club withdrew from the Peterborough League to become
founder members of the Jewson League Division One which started
the following season.
The Club has
taken major steps forward both on and off the pitch and their
present West End Ground was purchased and the Club House opened
in 1981. New changing rooms were completed in 1985 and during the
1989/90 season railings were erected all around the pitch area,
together with a paving slab path being put down two sides of the
grounds. A new brick-built stand, with a capacity of 150, was
built in 1990 and a second stand was opened in 1992 taking the
capacity of covered accommodation up to approximately 350. In
March 1991 flood-lighting was erected and on 9th April 19991 an
inaugural match against Potton United in Hinchingbrooke Cup took
place - Somersham losing 5-3 after extra time. The official
switching on of the new lights took place on 19th November 1991
when Norwich City were the visitors. Their team included nine
first team regulars - some of whom were English, Scottish and
Welsh internationals. The Canaries ran out 7-1 winners.
The Club
celebrated its Centenary season with many events, one of which
saw Trevor Brooking bring a select XI which included Billy Bonds
and Frank Lampard to the West End ground. The match, watched by a
large crowd, ended with honours even at two goals a piece. An
official Centenary celebration evening was held in November at
the Ferry Boat Inn and was attended by many past and present
members at which Mr. Maurice Armstrong, a F.A. representative,
presented an illuminated address to the club. To end a great
Centenary season the Club won the Hunts Senior Cup and finished
runner-up in the Hinchingbrooke Cup. The Reserves also won the
Cambridge Premier 'B' league and the 'A' side were promoted as
runners-up from Cambs '3B'.
