Hadleigh took the three points in this pulsating Jewson League Division 1 match but the game could easily have gone to Somersham, who produced an number of goal scoring chances to take at least a share of the points.

Hadleigh started off brightly and had their chance to score early in the game when Somersham goal keeper, Barry Smith, fumbled for the ball which hit the post only for the ball to be cleared. Overall Smith had an excellent game and produced an number of fine saves to deny Hadleigh. Town had difficulty breaking down the visitors defence, with the two centre backs dominating play. It was the visitors who opened the score when the ball was played out to the left and whipped into the six yard box, then headed into the back of the net.

Somersham conjured up some magic of their own when Dave Green beat two players to curl a left footed shot into the bottom corner. Both sides pressed for a second goal only for half time whistle to blow.

Half Time: 1-1

Second half started with Town kicking into the Kop end. The home team came off the blocks the quickest and nearly took the lead, Carl Osbourne was lucky that his shot went just over the bar. Out of the blue Hadleigh scored a scorcher from thirty five yards. The ball rocketed into the top corner of the net. Somersham kept pressing for the equaliser with the best chance coming to Adam Clayton (Gimp) who was found free in the six yard box. Gimp was closed down and his shot went wide of the Hadleigh goal. Then in the dying seconds Simon Anderson headed the ball over the bar from a corner.

The only unsavoury incident, which was not spotted by the ref, occurred when a Somersham player spat in the face of the Hadleigh full back. I am sure that the player concerned regrets the incident and it is something the managers should ensure never happens again.

Final Score: 2-1
